| Porest is Mark Gergis, composer, performer, producer and archivist of international audio/visual culture. Across twenty years, Porest has issued a confounding collection of music and audio works, with three full-length albums released on the on Seeland, Resipiscent and Abduction labels, and a myriad of singles, self-released cassettes, compilations, soundtracks, small press publications and films. His work spans mangled post-ethno pop, surrealist radio-dramas and diabolical protean folklore. Gergis was a co-founder of the experimental Bay Area music/performance collective Mono Pause (1993–2004) and its Southeast Asian permutation Neung Phak (2001–). His solo and group live performances are legendarily provocative – slipping between heady multi-instrumentation, political dirty bombs and absurdist irreverence. A regular contributor to the Sublime Frequencies record label, and founder of the new Sham Palace label, Gergis is renown for his research and collecting of international music, field recordings and audio-visual material. He is also responsible for introducing Syrian singer Omar Souleyman to western audiences, managing and producing Omar since 2006, including four releases on Sublime Frequencies, one on Sham Palace, and producing and co-arranging Omar and Bjork’s collaborative EP, Crystalline in 2011. |
